Provided is a nickel-containing catalyst that has outstanding coking resistance, is perfectly suited to DSS operation, and in which the carrier and the nickel have a strong interlinkage. Also provided is a fuel cell system. This catalyst, which breaks down hydrocarbons, is a catalyst comprising at least a compound containing nickel and aluminium and metal nickel having a particle diameter that falls within the range of 1 to 25nm. The binding energy of the metal nickel and the compound containing nickel and aluminium is 874.5 to 871.5ev (Ni 2p1/2), 857 to 853ev (Ni 2p3/2), and 73.5 to 70ev (Al 2p), and activation energy is 4 x 104 to 5 x 104J/mol. |
