ILLUMINATION OPTICAL SYSTEM, OPTICAL SYSTEM FOR IMAGE PROJECTION, AND IMAGE PROJECTION APPARATUS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical system which can be easily manufactured and designed and can project a bright image with high contrast.

SOLUTION: Illumination optical systems 2-7 guide a luminous flux emitted from a light source 1 to an image forming element 8 through an optical surface 7a having a light-splitting function. The illumination optical systems comprises conversion systems 2-4 for converting each width of the luminous flux, in a first cross section XZ and a second cross section YZ orthogonal to each other in the illumination optical systems, into width of the luminous flux different from width before incidence. Conversion rates of width of the luminous flux by the conversion systems are different from each other between the first cross section and the second cross section.
