PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide compositions and methods comprising isoforms of BMP-1 to diagnose and treat tissue defects and disorders.

SOLUTION: A method of testing a blood sample from an individual for diagnosing chronic renal failure in the individual comprises determining the presence of BMP-1 isoforms BMP-1-3 and BMP-1-5 in the sample. Pharmaceutical compositions for treating ischemic acute renal failure in an individual are provided containing BMP-1 isoforms. Pharmaceutical compositions for treating ischemia/reperfusion damage to a kidney in an individual are provided containing one or more kinds of antibody molecules specific to one or more kinds of BMP-1 isoforms.
