The cleaner (1) has a motor fan unit (4) for creating suction airflow, and a suction air guide for guiding suction air flow and an odor sensor (12) for detecting odor substance in suction air flow. The odor sensor i.e. mass-sensitive sensor, absorbs detected odorant substance on a sensor surface i.e. surface of an oscillation quartz, of the odor sensor, where the mass change in the odorant substance is detected by the odor sensor. The odor sensor and a motor fan unit share resources in order to control the power of the motor fan unit. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a vacuum cleaner.
