The method involves clamping a book block (26) in a clamping device (36) in a back side-closer region parallel to a middle longitudinal axis of a back side (28) of the book block. A pressing unit (7) is moved against the back side. The pressing unit is placed in a region of the axis, subsequently moved above the back side parallel to the back side and pressed at the back side. Two pressing bodies (5, 6) e.g. semi rollers, of the pressing unit are outwardly symmetrically rolled on preselectable trajectories of the axis relative to each other for pressing the book block. An independent claim is also included for a device for pressing a book block at a rounded back side of the book block.
