The device (1) has a lining supply (7) and a cover supply (6) arranged upstream of a pressing station (10), and a linearly movable transporting unit (14) connected to the pressing station. The transporting unit selectively transfers a lining strip (2) or a cover (3) into the pressing station in a conveying direction (9) that extends perpendicular to a pressing direction (30). The transporting unit conveys the lining strip or the cover in the pressing station relative to a book block (4) into the position from which the lining strip or the cover is glued to spine of the block. An independent claim is also included for a method for producing a bound book block.
