PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination system which can judge more precisely a positional relation of distance of a luminance measuring unit for an illumination apparatus in order to control a light emitting luminance of the illumination apparatus. SOLUTION: In the illumination system, a light emitting luminance of each of illumination apparatuses 3 is controlled so that a measured luminance can become close to a target luminance and a power consumption by a wattmeter 6 can become optimal at least against an illumination apparatus which affects a measured luminance of the luminance measuring unit, based on the measured luminance from the luminance measuring unit 5 of an arbitral position and a target luminance. A communication of data between a luminance controlling unit 4 and the luminance measuring unit is conducted by an infrared beam communication means 8, and a specific light intensity producing region is selected from a plurality of predetermined light intensity producing regions based on a neighboring condition of the luminance measuring unit against the illumination apparatus, and the neighboring condition is judeged on whether the data is obtained from the infrared beam communication menas 8.
