A guide housing (1) has inner guide in which piston rod (2) is guided by bearing (3). A pneumatic housing is provided within piston rod and is positively connected with piston rod. A connection sleeve is provided within housing and connected at its upper end. A connecting device (21) is provided at upper end of piston rod. A tracking power source is provided for applying first vertically acting thrust force to piston rod. A spring (9) is arranged at lower end of piston rod, such that lower free end of piston rod is projected, and spring is subjected to second vertical compressive force. An independent claim is included for method for welding to-be-joined workpieces.
