The device (1) has a base body (2), and a penetrator (3) e.g. needle or blade, supported at the base body in a movable manner. The penetrator penetrates into a timber material product (10) to be examined. An adjustable energy storage (4) loads the penetrator with force in the direction of the product, and a display device (51) i.e. scale, displays penetration depth of the penetrator into the product. The energy storage is designed as a pressure storage, and a fixing device fixes the penetrator in a penetration position relative to the base body.
