A web slitter comprises a bar 1 having a portion 5 with uniformly distributed gaseous passageways, the bar having or being connected to means for supplying pressurised gas to provide a gaseous cushion between the bar and a web passing over it, slitters being held in a position, in use, to slit a web as it is drawn over the bar. The portion may be a porous metal. The bar may be a cylindrical stainless steel shaft, a quadrant being removed and replaced with porous material, or may be a flat bar with a crescent shaped, curved or flat layer of porous material on top (Figures 5, 9). A self healing strip 7 e.g. of silicone, neoprene or polyurethane may be placed in a slot 6 in the portion 5, the tips of the slitters being received in the strip (Figure 3) reducing or eliminating vibration. Blade receiving grooves may be cut in the top of the bar (Figure 14). Air ports 3 may extend from the bar to be connected to a source of pressurised gas, an air gallery or cavity (8, Figure 2) being formed in the bar. |
