[Class 53] A dry cell having a caustic potash electrolyte and a mercuric oxide depolarizer 4 is provided with a negative electrode consisting of a roll 7 of paper coated with zinc on one surface, the zinc on the outer turn of paper being in contact with the inner surface of the zinc container 1. The roll of paper is prepared by coating a paper sheet with a suspension of zinc-mercury amalgam in starch and water by a spraying, brushing or rolling operation. The positive electrode 3 is an iron or carbon rod. To fill the cell with electrolyte it is placed in a vessel which is then exhausted and caustic potash solution admitted to the container 1. A cardboard disc 9 is then placed above the roll 7 and covered with a layer 10 of petroleum jelly. The cell is closed by a metal cap 11 which is insulated from the container 1 by a sheath 2 of polyvinyl chloride which is turned over the lip 12 of the container. Specifications 612,086 and 620,445 are referred to in the Provisional Specification. |
