[Class 7 (ii)] An intake or exhaust silencer comprises two or more expansion chambers 16, 17 with perforated or apertured outlet conduits 19, 22 extending just short of and aligned with the inlets 13, 18 to the chambers. The area of the gaps between the ends of the outlet conduits 19, 22 and the inlets is preferably twice the cross-sectional area of the conduits, and the total area of the perforations in an outlet conduit is preferably between 1 to 5 times the cross-sectional area. The outer shell 10 and the conduits 19, 22 may be of other than cylindrical shape, e.g. oval or star-shaped. |
