[Class 55 (i)] Coke issuing from a continuous distillation furnace in the form of a column is quenched by the passage of an inert gas, e.g. the distillation gas, in a transverse direction, the quenching gas being circulated in a closed path between the column and a cooling apparatus. As shown, the wall of a conduit 2, forming an extension of the distillation chamber 1, is formed with oppositelydisposed perforations communicating with chambers 5 and 6 connected by pipes 10 and 13 to a cooling apparatus 11 and circulating fan 14. The pipes 10 and 13 are fitted with valves 101 and 131 and with branch pipes 15 and 17 controlled by valves 16 and 18 through which regulated quantities of inert gas may be discharged from or admitted to the circuit. The perforations communicating with the chamber 6 may be controlled by hinged shutters 8 to vary the velocity of flow.</p> |
