The method involves determining filling level in a container (10) by a sensor i.e. air or fluid-coupled ultrasonic sensor (1), based on a running time measurement. A signal characterizing the filling level in the container is transmitted to an evaluation device (6) i.e. control device of combustion engine, over a time-dependant transmission signal i.e. pulse-width modulated signal. Filling volume of the container is calculated from the signal characterizing the filling level under consideration of time course of the transmission signal. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program for executing a method for determining fluid level (2) a computer program product with a program code stored on a computer-readable medium (3) a device for determining fluid level in a container.
