An electrodeionisation apparatus for the removal of one or more ions from feedwater has one or more chambers 24, 26, 28, 36, 46 comprising ion exchange resin 25, 27, 29, 37, 47, wherein at least one chamber comprises a majority of one or more ion exchange resins having a low attractive selectivity for the ion(s) to be removed. In this way, the low attractive selectivity will have a complementary high transport selectivity, which reduces the hindering of the transport of the ion(s) to be removed towards their site or stream of removal, e.g. a wastewater stream. Preferably, the apparatus has two chambers partly, substantially or wholly filled with one or more low attractive selectivity ion exchange resins. The ion exchange resin having low attractive selectivity may be a type II resin and/or a gel-type resin. Suitably, the apparatus includes a number of chambers forming a stack. In another aspect, the use of ion exchange resin of low attractive selectivity in the manufacture of an electrodeionisation apparatus is claimed. A method of treating a fluid by passing the fluid through the apparatus is also claimed. |
