发明名称 BLOOD FLOW CHAMBER/SYSTEM TO BE COUPLED WITH GLUCOSE SENSOR AND INSULIN/GLUCOSE INFUSION PUMP FOR TREATMENT OF INSULIN DEPENDENT DIABETES PATIENTS
摘要 Design for a blood flow chamber/system to be coupled with glucose sensor and insulin/glucose infusion pump in order to create an artificial pancreas for patients with insulin dependant diabetes: This device/system will help provide continuous and accurate blood glucose measurements for individuals with Insulin Dependant Diabetes. This device will be grouped with a continuous glucose sensor and an infusion pump (presently available commercially). Portacaths already exist and are used to administer chemotherapy drugs, antibiotics, parenteral nutrition, etc. to patients. Glucose sensors grouped with an insulin infusion pump already exist and are commercially available. Such sensors are limited by placement of their needles in patients' subcutaneous tissue. Thus they provide glucose levels of subcutaneous tissue fluid in which the needle is inserted. It takes time for glucose levels in the subcutaneous tissues to equilibrate to that of blood; thus data reported by such sensors are an accurate representation of the patients' blood glucose levels at that exact time. This lag may not pose an issue under steady and stable conditions. However, under circumstances of fluctuating blood glucose levels such as during activity or post parandialy an accurate and rapid blood glucose measurement followed by appropriate amount of insulin (or possibly IV glucose) administration would be ideal. This idea/system couples a blood chamber (created through modifying existing port models, and/or artificial vessels, or bioengineered vessels), with existing continuous blood glucose sensors and, (modified) insulin infusion pumps. As previously mentioned the advantage of this system compared to the existing and commercially available models is DIRECT and rapid measurement of blood glucose levels (compared to glucose levels in subcutaneous tissue done by the existing models) and rapid and appropriate response from an infusion pump. This system allows the existing infusion pumps and glucose sensors to act as an artificial pancreas and eliminate hypo or hyperglycaemic periods. This will also eliminate the need for active management on patients' behalf and multiple daily needle pokes for accurate blood glucose measurements. This system can also be coupled with other sensory devices which measure other chemical levels in blood and couple that with appropriate medical response by an infusion pump.
