A cutting insert used primarily as the gauge inserts for a rock drill bit preferably for percussive rock drilling is disclosed. The cutting insert can also be adapted to roller bits. The insert is provided with a cutting edge(3) on its domed or ballistic surface. When such inserts are mounted on the rock drill bit, the cutting edges are towards the wall of the drilled hole. The rock drill bit impacts the same as prior bit designs, but the cutting edge cuts away rock instead of spalling away the rock. This therefore prolongs the life of the inserts. Also, a roller cone rock drill bit is disclosed.
