Provided is a lithium secondary battery having reduced internal resistance. The lithium secondary battery is provided with a positive electrode, a negative electrode, and a nonaqueous electrolyte. The positive electrode has, as a positive electrode active material (30), a lithium transition metal composite oxide having a layer structure. Surface portions (82A) of positive electrode active material particles (82) have added thereto, by means of ion implantation, at least one kind of elements among the elements that belong to groups 3-7 on the periodic table.
