A segmented rotor for a vertical rotor wind turbine includes a plurality of rotor segments that are installed onto a shaft 36 that is connected to the electrical generator of the turbine. Each rotor blade segment includes a sleeve 50 for installation over the shaft, the sleeve including a plurality of grooves 52 formed longitudinally along the interior sleeve surface for mating with at least one of a plurality of cross-sectional vertices 62 running along the outer surface of the shaft, at least two rotor blades 44 that are positioned in fixed relationship to one another, and struts 54 for connecting the rotor blades to the sleeve. The number of grooves on the sleeve surface is related to the number of vertices on the shaft and the number of rotor blade segments that are stacked on the shaft and which complete a single turn fraction of the rotor.
