Disclosed is an apparatus for use in a railway fastening assembly. The apparatus has a railway rail clip anchoring device(1) for retaining a railway rail fastening clip (3) of a railway rail fastening assembly, the clip having a first part for bearing on a railway rail (5) and a heel portion (32, 36). The clip is separable from the anchoring device, the anchoring device having a head and a stem. The stem extends from the head for securing the anchoring device to a concrete sleeper (6). The head has a substantially upright front face configured for location adjacent to a foot of a railway rail when the device is in use, and two interconnected spaced-apart walls adapted to hold between them a portion of the clip to be retained. Clip-engaging means comprising a downwardly-projecting projection are provided by the walls for engaging an upwardly-facing surface of a portion of the rail fastening clip to be retained. The apparatus further has a component (7) with first portion (71), a second portion and a connection portion (73) interconnecting and spacing apart the first and second portions. The first portion is adapted for location between the front face of the rail clip anchoring device and the side of the foot of the railway rail and receives a lateral load from the railway rail. The second portion is adapted for location on an opposite side of the anchoring device to its front face when the first portion is located between that face and the rail, and serves as a heel seat portion configured to receive the heel portion of the rail fastening clip.
