The invention relates to an encoded particle. Specifically, the encoded particle of the invention comprises: a) at least one metal core; b) a labelling agent bonded to the surface of said metal core, providing a labelled metal core; c) an outer layer of an inert material that encapsulates said labelled metal core; and d) at least one biomolecule directly or indirectly bonded to said outer layer. Furthermore, the present invention relates to a method for the preparation of an encoded particle. Moreover, the present invention relates to a method for the preparation of a microsphere and to the microsphere obtained by means of the method. Again, the present invention relates to a method for detecting biological material. In addition, the present invention relates to the use of an encoded particle.
