The invention relates to a method for reducing the gain of an inverter (10) having a power supply system bridge (40) and an upstream step-up converter (20), in which method a first measured variable, which is representative of a bridge temperature, and a second measured variable, which is representative of a supplied converter power for the inverter (10), are captured. The converter power supplied to a power supply system (100) is decreased to a reduced power value during the gain reduction, with the additional capture of a third measured variable, which is representative of a generator voltage on generator connections (60) of the inverter (10), or a fourth measured variable, which is representative of a power supply system voltage on a power supply system output (110) of the inverter (10), and determination of the reduced power value on the basis of the first measured variable and the second measured variable and at least one of the third and fourth measured variables. A control device is set up to capture the measured variables and to reduce the gain using limiting values for the converter power which are determined from the measured variables, and may be a part of the inverter (10).
