<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cationic surface sizing agent that has an excellent dispersion stability and imparts excellent sizing properties irrespective of an environment in which it is used, especially water conditions (hardness, pH and the like) and types of paper (paper, cardboard and the like) to which it is applied. <P>SOLUTION: A method for producing a cationic surface sizing agent includes: a first process of obtaining a copolymer (A) by solution polymerization of a monomer mixture containing a 15-45 wt.% tertiary amino group containing monomer (a), a 15-85 wt.% (meta) acrylic acid ester (b), and 0-70 wt.% styrene (c) under the existence of a chain transfer agent; a second process of obtaining a copolymer (B) by polymerization of the copolymer (A) and a nonionic hydrophilic monomer (d); a third process of obtaining a copolymer (C) by polymerization of the copolymer (B) and a hydrophobic monomer (e) in the absence of surfactant; and a fourth process of obtaining a quaternary ammonium salt of the copolymer (C) by quaternarization of tertiary amino groups existing in the copolymer (C). <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT |
