The vehicle has an electromechanical switching actuator (SA) connected with a manual transmission (G). The actuator is controlled by an electronic controller (SG), which is electrically connected with a manual gear selector lever (H). The controller initiates a gear (0) as another gear associated to a gear selection position (1) during presence of the gear selection position based on input signals (E). The latter gear is not randomly selected by a driver by the gear selector lever. A clutch (K) is provided between the manual transmission and a drive motor (M) e.g. electric motor. An independent claim is also included for a method for automatically engaging a gear.
