635,792. Controlling motor vehicle clutches. HUMBER, Ltd., MILLER, A.C., and BERRY, G. Sept. 11, 1947, No. 24995. [Class 80 (ii)] A motor vehicle electro-magnetic clutch 18, such as described in Specification 594,906, is engaged by a speed-responsive generator 4 at low engine speeds above which a voltage relay 9 transfers the clutch supply to a 12 volt battery 21. The generator output terminal 2 is connected, via the contact 10 of an emergency switch 12, the contact 13 of the relay 9 and the contact 15 of a relay 16, to the clutch winding which has an earth return path. A resistor 22 and a capacitor 23 suppress induced clutch voltages. When stationary but in gear, increasing engine speed increases the generator voltage to 6-12 volts thereby gradually engaging the clutch, whereafter it attains such a value as to cause the coil 8 of the relay 9 to move its armature to a contact 14 thereby connecting the battery 21 to the clutch winding. When changing gear a lever 20, as described in Specification 619,223, engages a contact 19 whereby the coil 17 of the relay 16 is energized thereby causing interruption of the supply to the clutch which becomes dis-engaged until after selection of the next gear. Should the generator fail the clutch may be energized by the battery at all speeds by connecting the blade of the switch 12 to a contact 11. Variation of the predetermined speed at which the clutch engages is effected by opening a switch 5 shorting a resistor 7, connected in the generator field circuit to a conventional cut-out and compensated voltage control regulator 24.
