<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect blank paper irrespective of a size of an original. <P>SOLUTION: A density histogram of an image in a reading range including an out-of-original range in an original image which is read is created. An original range is discriminated from a background portion except for the original from the histogram, and the original range is specified.
