<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably perform autofocus control even if an object to be focused is lost when photographing a moving image. <P>SOLUTION: If the reliability of a facial detection result is equal to or higher than a threshold value, a flag is turned on and an AF evaluation frame is set based on the facial detection position, and the frame display which corresponds to the AF evaluation frame is performed for a picked-up image. If the reliability of the face detection result is lower than the threshold value, the past reliability and the current reliability are compared. As a result of the comparison, if the past reliability is equal to or higher than the threshold value, the past distance measurement result and the current distance measurement result are compared. If the difference is small, an imaging apparatus is controlled not to move the focus lens position and the frame display is not changed. If the difference is large, the flag is turned off, the AF evaluation frame is fixed in the center and the frame display is stopped. As a result of the comparison between the past reliability and the current reliability, if the past reliability is lower than the threshold value, on and off of the flag is determined. If the flag is turned on, the lens position is fixed and the frame display is not changed.
