The pump (1) has a cylinder head (2) with a cylindrical hollow space (4) in which a movable piston (5) is sealingly accommodated. One end of the piston defines a pumping chamber (6), and another end of the piston is provided for operation by a drive shaft. An inlet valve (3) and a discharge valve (9) are provided in the cylinder head and connect the pumping chamber with a fuel inlet (7) and an outlet (10), respectively. The inlet valve is designed as a digitally controllable valve with a controllable opening or closing position or a magnetic valve.
