<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate high-frequency noise which is similar in an appearance of a conventional "film grain" for a digital video signal. <P>SOLUTION: By adding a relatively small amount of film grain noise to a video, when a human watches the video, he/she can feel more natural or better. By using digital film grain formation, unnatural smooth artifacts in a digital video, such as "block distortions" or "false contours" in the case of the compressed video can be concealed, and/or a visual improvement or special effect can be supplied to an arbitrary digital video stream.
