The hob has a set of cooking zones (3-8) formed on an upper side (2) of a cooking hob plate (1), where the hob is configurable with respect to number, position and/or size of the cooking zones that are formed for active operation in a selection mode. A control unit controls configuration of the hob. An operating device is provided for selecting the desired cooking zones in the selection mode. One of the cooking zones is section-wise arranged with the other cooking zone in a surface-overlapping manner, and surface boundaries of the cooking zones are marked by marks (3a-8a) i.e. lines. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a cooking hob.
