<p>A method of conditioning a first, heterogeneous contact surface 1a for operational engagement with a second contact surface (2a fig 3) comprises performing a smoothing operation on part or all of the first contact surface 1a whilst subjecting said part or all of the first contact surface respectively to a contact pre-stress Fpre-stress corresponding to a nominal operational contact stress (F fig. 3) between the first and second contact surfaces. The contact pre-stress may correspond to the distribution across the surface of the operational contact stress (fig. 8). The smoothing operation may be polishing or machining and the contact surface may form part of a gas turbine blade or a mounting disc for a gas turbine blade. The surface roughness of surface 1a before conditioning may be affected by regions 5,6 of different Poissonâ s ratio which lead to different levels of compression under operational contact stress (F fig. 3) and hence increased roughness and frictional wear in operation. Smoothing the contact surface 1a using the present method produces a smoother profile in operation.</p> |
