A device for monitoring the area around a vehicle is provided with: a first distance calculation means (25) which calculates the distance between the vehicle (10) and an object, using the parallax gradient of the image portions of the same object among a plurality of images captured by means of infrared cameras (2R, 2L) at different times within a predetermined sampling period; a vehicle speed sensor (4) which detects the speed of the vehicle (10); and a sampling period setting means (23) which sets a sampling period to be shortened with the increase of the speed of the vehicle (10). |
