A method for execution upon processing of at least one histological sample arranged in a closed cassette 2, comprises the step of, prior to opening of the cassette, detaching the sample from the cover of the cassette and/or isolating the sample by heating the cassette, and exposing it directly or indirectly to mechanical vibration. Apparatus for carrying out the method may comprise a paraffin heating bath 6 and vibration generating means 7. The method may be used to prevent samples from becoming damaged by adhering to the cover of the cassette. An image processing system (9, fig 2) may be provided, that has a video camera 10 that optically monitors the operation of detachment and/or isolation through the sieve openings of the cassette. Information obtained from the video camera may be used to calculate the necessary vibration parameters and regulate vibration means 7.
