642,662. Dielectric heating. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP ONDERZOEKINGSINSTITUUT RESEARCH. May 1, 1947, No. 11738. Convention date, March 18. [Class 39(iii)] Rayon cakes or like packages of wound thread 3 are dried by dielectric heating in a H.F. electric field, the cakes being so placed in the field that at least an end face is screened from the field. In order to counteract any uneven heating caused by this arrangement relative movement may be imparted to the cakes or to the field to effect uniform heating. The arrangement shown in Fig. 2 employs three electrodes 9, 10, 11, spaced around the package 12. Voltages 120 degrees out of phase may be supplied to the electrodes to effect a rotation of the electric field in a clockwise direction and the support 13 may also be rotated so as to impart an anti-clockwise rotation to the package. The speed of relative rotation may be selected in proportion to the drying time to effect uniform heating. The packages may be treated in a stronger field and then cooked in a weaker field or allowed to cool in the atmosphere.
