Production of an inorganic-inorganic or inorganic-organic gradient composite layer comprises forming a micro-porous inorganic layer with a porosity gradient on a substrate using a flame, applying a liquid to the layer formed to form an inorganic or organic layer and penetrating the applied layer forming the gradient composite layer. An independent claim is also included for a gradient composite layer produced by the above process.
