<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a motor drive system capable of quickly detecting failures, such as shorting of a switching element, and capable of safely stopping a system, when a failure is detected. <P>SOLUTION: The motor drive system drives an n-phase (n is an integer of 2 or larger) motor with field by an n-phase inverter, and n pieces of arm parts, in which at least two self arc-extinguishing switching elements, with a reflux diode that is connected in reverse parallel are connected in series, are connected directly in parallel with a DC voltage part or by way of a diode. The connection point of the switching elements at the arm part is connected to a motor as an output terminal.
