[Class 75(iv)] In a vehicle lamp-mask of the type comprising a plurality of spaced vertical slats 11 which are blackened on their sides facing the off-side of the vehicle and are reflecting on their other sides, the ratio between the longitudinal depth D of each slat and the spacing S of the slats is greater than 5.67 to 1 and is preferably 8 to 1. The slats 11 which are made of sheet metal and are blackened on one side by the application of a paint composed of lamp black, methylated spirits and a binder, are secured in mild steel channels secured to a mild steel lining 13 for a containing cylinder 14 and the spacing between the slats at their centres is maintained by two horizontal slats 21, 22 which interlock with the front and rear vertical edges of the slats. The cylinder 14 is provided with a transparent front 15 clamped between an inturned flange 16 on the cylinder and the lining 13, and with an out-turned flange 18 by means of which the mask can be secured to the front of a vehicle headlamp in place of the front glass. The mask may be secured within the casing of the headlamp. In an alternative construction slats made from aluminium which has one. surface dyed black during anodising are slid into slots in a moulded plastic casing. One or more lamps fitted with masks may be mounted for swivelling about a vertical axis and may be operated through mechanism such as Bowden cable connected to the steering gear, Means may be provided for rendering the swivelling mechanism ineffective when desired.
