摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst fiber having high strength and a sintering-resistant property, and a method for producing the same. <P>SOLUTION: The invention relates to silica-based composite oxide fiber composed of an oxide phase (first phase) mainly made of a silica ingredient and a metal oxide phase (second phase) composed of a metal other than silica. The proportion of presence of one or more metallic elements of the metal oxides constituting the metal phase (second phase) slantingly increases toward the surface of the fiber. The metal oxide phase (second phase) is formed of particles of the constituent metal. Mesopores having an average diameter of 2-30 nm and extending from the surface of the fiber toward the interior of the fiber are formed among the particles of the constituent metal.
