<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic strainer having a simple structure, capable of nearly securely removing a captured solid object adhering to an inner peripheral surface of a cylindrical element by using only a cleaning member, and allowing easy maintenance. <P>SOLUTION: The automatic strainer includes: a casing 2 including a liquid inlet port 8, a liquid outlet port 9, and a captured object discharge port 10; the cylindrical element 3 formed with a large number of holes; a rotation shaft 6 rotatably arranged in the element 3; a first cleaning member 4 mounted to the rotation shaft 6; a plurality of projections 5 aligned in the axial direction of a predetermined position on an inner surface of the element 3; and a driving device 22. Liquid flowing from the liquid inlet port 8 is made to flow into the element 3. The automatic strainer captures the solid object in the liquid by making the liquid permeate through a porous wall surface while making the liquid flow and pass in the element 3, and makes the permeated liquid flow out of the liquid outlet port 9. The first cleaning member 4 is frictionally run on the inner peripheral surface of the element 3 to remove the captured object adhering to the inner peripheral surface of the element 3. The captured object is discharged from the captured object discharge port 10 to the outside.
