<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a machine tool capable of shortening a tool change time by avoiding the contact of a large-diameter tool with a change arm, and to provide a control method for controlling tool change operations. <P>SOLUTION: When both a tool 24 attached to a machining shaft 9 and a tool 24 stored in a tool pot 31 are standard tools, the operation of the tool pot 31 to approach the change arm 18 and the operation of the machining shaft 9 (shaft base 3) to move to a change position are performed in parallel.
