<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a guide mechanism for a recording medium able to bring the conveyance position of a recording medium with respect to the position of an intermediate transfer belt into a predetermined range, and an image forming apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: A tension application roll 40 moves in circular arc when shifted between a multi-color transfer mode and a monochrome transfer mode. As a result, the position of an intermediate transfer belt 32 changes and a support member 162 moves. A second guide part 182 and a third guide part 184 are moved by the movement of the support member 162. That is, the second guide part 182 and the third guide part 184 are moved by linking the change in the position of the intermediate transfer belt 32 in the contact part of the intermediate transfer belt 32 and the leading end of a sheet member P.
