PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a positive electrode material useful for manufacturing a lithium ion secondary battery which has high resistance to overdischarge.

SOLUTION: A positive electrode material in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention is used in a positive electrode of a lithium ion secondary battery, and contains a metallic oxide containing at least Li, Mn, Cr, and O. The molar ratio of the elements constituting the metallic oxide is Li:Mn:Cr:O=1.1-1.3:0.2-0.6:0.02-0.6:2.
