FIELD: chemistry. ^ SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing compounds of formula (Ia) and/or compounds of formula (Ib), used as detergents with high dispersing properties, where R1 denotes a saturated alkyl residue with a straight or branched chain with 1-22 carbon atoms or a mono- or polyunsaturated alkenyl residue with a straight or branched chain with 2-22 carbon atoms, R2, R3 independently denote hydrogen, an alkyl residue with a straight or branched chain with 1-22 carbon atoms, a mono- or polyunsaturated alkenyl residue with a straight or branched chain with 2-22 carbon atoms or an aryl residue with 6-12 carbon atoms, X denotes an alkylene residue with 2-4 carbon atoms, n is a number from 0 to 100, m is a number from 1 to 250 and B is an alkali cation or hydrogen, and/or protonated forms of corresponding carboxylic acids, wherein one or more compounds of formula (IIa) and/or formula (IIb), where R1, R2, R3, X, n and m denote the same as in the formulae given above, are oxidised with oxygen or oxygen-containing gases in the presence of a gold-containing catalyst and at least one alkaline compound, wherein said gold-containing catalyst contains gold and an additional group VIII element with weight ratio of gold to group VIII metal equal to 70:30-96:5.
