PURPOSE: A position indicator is provided to reduce unnecessary power consumption by using a position detecting sensor. CONSTITUTION: A first electrode(7) receives an AC signal from a position detecting sensor. A transmitting signal generating circuit(100) generates a signal for detecting a position. A second electrode(6) is different from the first electrode to which the signal generated by the transmitting signal generating circuit is supplied. A signal detecting circuit(200) detects the reception of the AC signal from the position detecting sensor thorough the first electrode. A transmission control circuit(300) controls the transmission of the signal of the transmitting signal generating circuit through the second electrode in response to the output of the signal detecting circuit.
