The present invention relates to a method (50) for controlling the operation of an internal combustion engine, said engine having a plurality of cylinders and a system for temporarily disconnecting some of said cylinders. The method (50) comprises a step (54) of reconnecting one or more previously disconnected cylinders, and a step (56) of controlling the backing off of an ignition advance of the cylinders of the engine, during a transition period following the reconnection of one or more previously disconnected cylinders. More particularly, during the control step (56), two different strategies for backing off the ignition advance are applied: a first backing off strategy (S1) applied to the cylinders which were already connected before the reconnection step (54), and a second backing off strategy (S2) applied to the cylinders which were reconnected during the reconnection step (54). The present invention also relates to a computer for implementing the control method (50), and also to a motor vehicle incorporating such a computer.
