The damper (10) has a cushioning piston (30) placed along a longitudinal axis (22) of an attenuation cylinder (20). Two of three fluid connections (40-44) are placed between an upper working chamber (24), a lower working chamber (26) and a balancing area (70). A switching valve (64) e.g. direct-controlled magnetic valve, opens and closes one of the connections such that a damping medium (28) independently flows in the connection in a direction of movement of the piston from the upper chamber into the connection during movement of the piston in the cylinder.
