The exhaust system (1) has predetermined mounting positions for a multiple exhaust gas sensors and an electronic control unit (18) with electrical connection ports (19) for a connection of an exhaust gas sensor. A subset of the connection ports of an exhaust gas sensor is installed in mounting position. An exhaust gas catalyst is arranged in the exhaust system and a mounting position is provided upstream of the exhaust gas catalyst. An independent claim is included for a method for operating an exhaust gas system.
