A lower-eyelid search window (W2) that has matched pixels constituting the edge of a lower eyelid is deformed to fit said pixels, and the centroid of the deformed lower-eyelid search window (W2) is then set as the reference position of the lower eyelid. This makes it possible to set the reference position of the lower eyelid with high precision even if the shape of the lower-eyelid search window (W2) is different from the shape of the edge of the lower eyelid. The degree to which a driver's eye is open can thus be detected with high precision, in turn making it possible to determine the driver's degree of alertness with high precision.
