The system (11) has an exhaust pipe (13) for discharging an exhaust gas stream and an exhaust gas recirculation device (16) for demand-wise reconducting of a part of the stream into a suction line of a combustion engine. A movable waste gas valve (17) and an actuator (19) are arranged in the pipe. The actuator displaces the valve in an operating mode of the device for generating sound to enable motion such that pressure variations and a desired acoustic emission are caused in the exhaust stream, and a back pressure in the pipe is variable. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an exhaust system of a combustion engine.
