The method involves variably adjusting a compression ratio of an internal combustion engine by an adjusting device. A target-load is limited on a maximum load that is determined on the basis of the adjusted compression ratio, if an actual signal exceeds a predetermined threshold value. The actual signal characterizes an actual load of an internal combustion engine. The maximum load is determined in dependence of torque or air mass flow or an intake manifold pressure or speed of the internal combustion engine.
